Last weekend equinux hosted the third CocoaDevHouse Munich. Nearly 70 Cocoa developers from Switzerland, Austria and Germany joined the sessions that Martin Ott, member of equinux’ development team, already organized. Wanna see some of his snapshots at flickr? See you next year…

If you want to keep your Macs and Xserves up and running, especially in case of a power outage - then you should update to the latest APC Tracker 4.3.1. We’ve updated our UPS Client for APC devices to support the current APC firmware versions. And as we actually touched a good and running system, we’ve also fixed some glitches in the interface to make APC Tracker as good looking as you knew it, again. And yes, we’ve found no problems running APC Tracker with Leopard, yet. You’re already a registered APC Tracker user? Why waiting any longer to get your free update.

After three days at WWDC every developer can spell i-p-h-o-n-e forwards and backwards. Apple is heavily promoting development for its upcoming cell phone and wants every developer to polish up on their Web 2.0 skills in order to build something for the iPhone. Maybe the guys in Cupertino are just a little bit nervous about their first step into the world of mobile communications? Anyhow we’re enjoying the conference and ourselves as you can see in our latest pictures.

WWDC is ready to start: Just one hour left until Steve enters the stage. But you have to be patient if you don’t have a VIP- or press badge. Small talk between two Apple employees: “Where do you carry all the guys?” “We are creating loops throughout the building”.

Same procedure as every year: equinux joins Apple’s World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco. In only a few hours Steve Jobs will open WWDC 2007 with his well known keynote. equinux’ developers already arrived and secured their tickets after taking a breakfast. But the main question on first day was: Is 9 am too late for breakfast when you actually woke up at 5 am?

The next stop for equinux’ trend scouters is Taipeh’s Computex, the world’s second largest fair for computer electronics and information technology. It’s fairly unusual to come across cheap knockoffs and even more unusual to see a producer presenting the original right beside the copy. BaLaTV is one knockoff that unmistakably has Apple TV as an archetype. Funny enough… its producer calls itself Macpower. According to the staff at its booth, BaLaTV is just a prototype and is the successor of D7-3500. And it doesn’t take too much to find the inspiration for that machine, either.

equinux finds one of the first iPhone-knockoffs
We’re all used to seeing clones of popular consumer electronics products, but this time equinux trend scouts have uncovered an interesting knockoff that has hit sooner than expected: In the grey markets of southern China the “iPhone” is already readily available - and we were able to get our hands on one of these astonishing copies.
Whilst the packaging quickly reveals the origin of the product, the design of the device itself closely resembles the original. As with similar iPod knockoffs, the “iPhone” packs a lot of features:
- 2 Megapixel camera for photos and movies in MPEG4 format
- 2 SIM-Cards, which you can switch between on the fly
- WAP browser
- 64MB of built-in memory
- 256 MB micro SD Card in an expansion slot
- Stereo speakers on the front face and two additional speakers on the back that boast “3D Sound”
- USB-connector
Also included: a Stero-headset, an external power adapter, USB-cable and a second removable (!) battery.
Alas, as soon as you turn the device on, the forgery becomes obvious: The software doesn’t even come close to the revolutionary experience promised by the real deal: The user is required to use a stylus to clumsily navigate through the menus, similar to using a PDA.
